Updated review after reading extended paperback。Like his first book (twelve Angels weeping) this is a short story collection but unlike that one it forms a sort of overarching storyline which culminates in the final story of the book (the paradox moon)。 The writing is decent but like the first there are problems。 Older doctor who readers will understand when I say rudden has a lot in common with Gary Russell and Craig Hinton。 Both of those authors could cram far to many who references into their Updated review after reading extended paperback。Like his first book (twelve Angels weeping) this is a short story collection but unlike that one it forms a sort of overarching storyline which culminates in the final story of the book (the paradox moon)。 The writing is decent but like the first there are problems。 Older doctor who readers will understand when I say rudden has a lot in common with Gary Russell and Craig Hinton。 Both of those authors could cram far to many who references into their books。 Now I enjoyed a lot of their books but the same thing that happened in those happens in this book。 After a while the constant little references get a bit silly。 One or two。。。 fine。 I don't know how many are in this book but it's far too many。 Then there are little niggles。 The 7th doctor described as wearing a long coat and a big floppy hat? A fifth doctor that is only recognisable by his description, the character is completely wrong。 The doctor and davros meeting for Christmas drinks is just too silly and it's a huge shame as the story itself, father of the daleks is good but those moments even after a second read still don't work for me。 Ruddens's understanding of how the time war ended and how it affected the history of the time war seems off with Christopher Eccleston's doctor seemingly remembering the doctor's meeting in day of the doctor when he shouldn't remember it at all and the author seems to think the ending of the time war meant it didn't happen。 The events of day of the doctor don't rewrite the time war, it just ends it。 And that's the main problem with the book。 Its nothing major。 It just all feels a little off。 The writing itself is fine。 Mostly the characterisation is good but as I say it occasionally drifts。 The stories on the whole are good and the final story featuring Jodie's doctor is good, bringing the overall storyline to a satisfactory conclusion but a few as I say are not quite right and some are less effective than others。 I know a lot of this may sound very negative but most of the problems are minor and stem from my being an aged fact crammed fan! Yes I found it flawed but it's still a decent read。 Talk about paradoxes eh。。。 I've now read this for a second time and I did enjoy it more。Ok, the extended paperback。 An extra story, part of the time lord victorious storyline is included now。 Except the story, canaries, has nothing to do with the TLV storyline at all。 If we weren't told in the book it was linked I'm afraid I'd presume it was just an extra story added to the paperback version of wintertime。 It doesn't help that the story actually isn't that good either。 It doesn't add anything to either TLV or wintertime paradox。 So overall it's still a 4 star book though as it still has a few niggles and the new story is disappointing。 。。。more
